The 4 Happy Hormones & their roles in mental wellness

Dopamine

  • Dopamine is the reward chemical- it drives motivation, reward, and goal-seeking behavior.

  • It spikes when we achieve a goal, win a game, and when we anticipate or get exciting news.

  • It matters because it fuels ambition and focus

Think of it as our “I want it” chemical!

Serotonin

  •   Serotonin is the mood stabilizer- it regulates mood, confidence, and overall emotional balance.

  • It spikes with time in the sunlight, exercising, when we practice gratitude, and whe we feel valued or respected.

  • It matters because a healthy amount of serotonin helps keep us calm, secure, and emotionally stable.

Think of it as our “I am content” chemical!

Oxytocin

  • Oxytocin is the bonding hormones- it strengthens connection, trust, and bonding.

  • When it peaks/flows, it makes us feel like hugging , induces physical touch, deep conversations, and acts of kindness.

  • It matters because it builds relationships, reduces stress, and it is the key to love friendship, and social safety.

Think of it as our “I feel connected” chemical!

Endorphins

  • Endorphins is the natural pain killer- It reduces pain and boost pleasure

  • It is released during intense exercise, laughter, crying, and when we are eating spicy food.

  • They matter because they help us push through discomfort and stress. Thus, producing a runner’s high.

Think of they as our “I can do this” chemical!

These four systems work together.  A fulfilling life isn’t about chasing constant dopamine spikes: it’s about cultivating motivation (dopamine), stability (serotonin), connection (oxytocin), and resilience (endorphins).  Small daily habits like movement, sunlight, meaningful conversations, progress toward goals that nourish them all.
